Signs of Spring in the BUF
From the bloom of the seasonal flora to the timelessness of a classic baseball game, and simply being able to enjoy the outdoors to fill your lungs with fresh air, these are the spring rites of passage that we look forward to each year. So with winter’s thaw safely in the rearview mirror, it’s the perfect time to start making plans for your spring in the BUF.
Cherry Blossoms
Make your way to the Buffalo History Museum – the only remaining building from the Pan-American Exposition of 1901 — and stroll among the cherry trees that are a part of a well-tended and ever-growing Japanese Garden and Cherry Blossom Festival.
Baseball Games
Our field of dreams – Sahlen Field — is an oasis of green and a springtime promise of warmer days to come. The home of the Buffalo Bisons is considered the finest ballpark in the minor leagues.
Tulip Blooms
They can be found all around town, from the Rose Garden on Lincoln Parkway to City Hall’s front yard at Niagara Square. My favorite patch of springtime color can be found on the plaza in front of the Central Library.
Ice Cream Cones
Many of Buffalo’s ice cream stands go into hibernation sometime around November. It’s a sure sign of spring when seasonal stands like Kone King in West Seneca, Taffy’s in Orchard Park, Custard Corner in Buffalo, and many more, open for the season. Order a scoop or three just to show winter who’s boss.
Bike Rides
Pick up a Reddy Bike at one of the many convenient locations around downtown and head for Ohio Street and the miles of bikes paths that run from the Union Ship Canal to the Buffalo Lighthouse.
Long Walks
Lace up your walking shoes and head out through the heart of old Buffalo in neighborhoods like Allentown. This leisurely stroll will take you past lovingly cared for gardens along North Pearl Street, through the Cottage District and along the Mansions of Millionaire’s Row. Photo Opps
Buffalo is filled with some of the most impressive American architecture ever built. You have your pick of National Historic Landmarks, but I recommend Kleinhans Music Hall and its reflecting pool as the place to capture a pic that will make your Instagram account hum.
